Candlelit Yoga

My mom and I have never been hardcore yogis, but we like to get in a good stretch every now and then. To get the full benefits of yoga, you should do it at least twice a week. My mom and I are lucky if we get to a class twice a month so we are really slacking. We did say we want to try to practice more, so when I saw Tivoli Village was hosting Candlelit Yoga on the Piazza and it was a night I had off work we decided to check it out.

Tivoli Village is a nice area in Summerlin, Las Vegas that is filled with shops and restaurants. We go there for happy hours and our favorite jewelry shop, Charming Charlie (super cute stuff and fairly priced). There is even a David Barton Gym there and they actually help set up the event. Pressed Juicery took part in it too and offered free juice samples after the yoga class. Another reason I wanted to go because I absolutely love their juices – super yummy and healthy.

We got there about 30 minutes early since we had no idea what to expect and we figured it would be crowded. We were one of the first few there, but it filled up quickly. There were fake candles lighting the walls around us and they gave each one of us a fake candle to put at the top of our mat. They even passed around some oils to put on your skin. The piazza was surrounded by buildings so while it had been a windy night, most of the wind was blocked from us. I was thinking it was almost cool out, but once we would be in different positions I figured I’d warm up.

The instructor’s name was Scarlett and she was from David Barton Gym. She said not to worry if you were a beginner at yoga because this class was for everyone. She meant it, too. My mom and I are used to pretty active yoga classes, I guess you could say. I have never been in savasana (the resting pose, usually at the end of all yoga classes) for 20 minutes before, until that night. Wow, her voice was so soothing, talking about leaving all your problems behind, etc. No lie – I drifted off to sleep. I had had a long day, but still, I couldn’t believe I woke up drooling on my mat, haha.

We did child’s pose for a really long time and then a few small stretches, but nothing to get our heart rates up and then we ended back in savasana. I was getting cold just lying there. As soon as we finished up, I was the first one at the juice booth. They had a bunch of different flavored samples out and lucky for my mom and me, we got a buy one get one free juice coupon since we were the first ones to the booth. We also got a free three-day trial at David Barton Gym, which we will definitely have to check out since I heard it’s fancy.

While it wasn’t a bad class, my mom and I were just a little bored. We were hoping for some more stretches and personally, I was looking to practice my headstands. I would have categorized it more of a meditation class because like I said her voice was so relaxing. They are doing a different yoga class in the upcoming week, but we want to check it out if I have the night off work again.

A huge tip if anyone likes events like this – go on Facebook! Check out events happening near you and you will get a list of a variety of different things. After following Tivoli Village’s Facebook page I found out they do music bingo, numerous yoga classes, symphony concerts on the weekend. Places like Tivoli Village I’m sure they have events happening during the week, too. So get on and start exploring what goes on in your community.
